Project: Tiny Houses
Focuses: Research, design, construction, alternative housing, sustainability
Description: Tiny Houses offer an interesting opportunity for increasing the diversity within Australia’s current housing mix while providing great benefits in terms of social and environmental sustainability.
Over the past 6 months I have engaged in an ongoing process of learning about Tiny Houses. The highlights of my experiences so far have been; researching and designing tiny houses and potential urban strategies, meeting and engaging with the Tiny House community, participating in events and workshops, and assisting in the construction of a locally built Tiny House.
Both the potential and challenges associated with Tiny House living have inspired me to think more deeply about the ‘missing middle’, and what I refer to as the ‘missing bottom’, a reflection on the 20% of all Australians struggling to get by on <60% median income. At some point over the next several years I hope to begin building a Tiny House of my own.
