Project: Locally owned and operated eco tourist accommodation
Site: Port Resolution, Tanna Island, Vanuatu
Focuses: Design, construction
Description: In September 2018 a team of 20 students and 2 program directors travelled to remote Port Resolution to commence construction on a second eco bungalow as part of an ongoing collaboration with the local community. Our work encompassed initial set outs and the assembly and construction of the primary structure made from locally supplied timber.
During the trip we explored both the landscape and culture, gaining an appreciation for the pristine environment and strength of community, while coming to grips with many of the challenges faced by the Ni-Vanuatu. Overall it was an inspiring journey that taught all of us a thing or two about hard yakka.
The Design Construct Program is currently assisting the Community of Port Resolution to build beachside eco visitor accommodation on Tanna Island, Vanuatu. In early 2012, on the basis of evolving experience with remote Indigenous projects, the Design Construct Program was invited to work with the community at Port Resolution to design and construct visitor accommodation as a means of generating income for children’s education.
